Philosophy of Business is to be Philosophical in Business

Business is like a tora - tora ride, where at one point of time, you will be on a high, and the very next moment you will find yourself at the lowest ebb. The moment an Entrepreneur starts reacting vigorously to every high and low, then that becomes the end of the story. I still remember the words of my last company’s CEO - “Externalize in Business”. This was his answer to the question of how he managed to succeed in business. But there is a very thin line separating externalization and complacency. In business, there is no room for complacency at any point of time.

The mind works best, when it is open to ideas and is flexible enough to think beyond the boundary. If we keep our mind filled with pre - occupied notions and thoughts, it leads to anger, frustration and desperation - and this is the worst scenario for an Entrepreneur, when he loses his mind and the grey matter stops working in a constructive way. As for example, before I ventured into business, there were many people, who promised a lot to offer various kinds of help and support, but after I started my business, they had a different face, and behaved in the most strange way. So what should I do? Wait for these people to change - nah! I thought constructively, and looked for alternative options, without breaking my head into why it has happened they way it did. To be true, I did spend some time breaking my head into it - but the goodwill prevailed, and I could come out of it soon. So that’s what needs to be done - ups and downs are part of the business. We have to take it in our stride and keep moving forward.

Well, coming back to the title of this article - “to be philosophical in business”. This statement is not just a metaphor, rather it is the whole and sole truth of business. We have to analyze all the aspects of business, and then deduce conclusions. An Entrepreneur cannot remain so busy in the humdrums of his business, that he forgets to look at his business from a higher perspective. A bird’s eye view of the business is very important. Everyday, the Entrepreneur should spend some time thinking about the larger picture of his business. The time will demand him to look at the most urgent things in business, but it is very important to look at the important things in business as well. There has to be clear demarcation between urgent and important aspects of business. I am emphasizing this point so much, because I have seen Entrepreneurs tend to do more of what they like to do, rather than what they ought to do. For example, if an Entrepreneur is having a technical background, then that does not mean he needs to spend all his time in technical executions. He also needs to spend time in other aspects like Finance, HR and more importantly Marketing. This awareness can come only when he rises himself above the day to day intricacies of business.

I am conclusing this article, by repeating that be philosophical in your business, think beyond the realms of possibilities, and remain open minded to absorb new ideas and giving your mind an opportunity to implement something which will change your business forever. Don’t react and think, rather think and act.
